How to do it
Set up
- Hold the handles with straight arms in front of the chest.
- Walk the feet forward and lean back until the body forms one straight line.
Do the rep
- Pull the elbows down and back toward the ribs while the hands move up and out, so the arms form a W.
- Return to straight arms under control.
What counts as a rep
A rep counts when the arms form a W with the elbows by the ribs and the hands at head height, and the arms return to straight.
One rep starts with straight arms in front of the chest, pulls the arms into a W with the hands at head height, and ends after a controlled return to straight arms.
Breathing
Exhale as the arms form the W; inhale as they return.
Cues
- Elbows down and back.
- Hands up and out.
- Walk the feet forward for a steeper angle when the reps get easy.
Common mistakes
Hands drop below the elbows
What you seeThe forearms point forward or down at the end of the pull.
FixUse a more upright angle and turn the hands up and out.
The W position trains the rotator cuff and the upper back together.
Hips sag
What you seeThe hips drop below the line from the shoulders to the heels.
FixSqueeze the glutes and use a more upright body angle.
A straight body keeps the work in the upper body instead of the hips.
Stop the set if
- Stop if you feel sharp pain.
- Stop if the anchor moves or a strap slips.
- End the set when you cannot meet the stated range under control.
