How to do it
Set up
- Stand with your back to the bench or box, the heels about one foot length from it and the feet at squat width.
Do the rep
- Reach the hips back and bend the knees until the hips touch the box lightly.
- Do not sit down or rest on the box.
- Push through the whole foot and stand up tall.
What counts as a rep
A rep counts when the hips touch the box lightly without resting and you return to a full stand.
One rep starts standing in front of the box, lowers until the hips lightly touch it, and ends at a full stand.
Breathing
Breathe in as you lower; exhale as you stand.
Cues
- Touch, do not sit.
- Knees follow the toes.
- Use a lower box when the reps get easy.
Common mistakes
Sitting down on the box
What you seeThe hips rest on the box and the legs relax.
FixTouch the box lightly and stand up at once.
The legs must keep working through the touch for the rep to train them.
Knees falling inward
What you seeThe knees move inside the line of the feet as you lower or stand.
FixPush the knees out so they stay over the toes.
Knees over the toes keep the load on the hips and thighs.
Stop the set if
- Stop if you feel sharp pain.
- Stop if the box moves.
- End the set when you cannot stand up without rocking.
