How to do it

Set up

  1. Stand side-on to a bench or box at or below knee height.
  2. Put the near foot flat on the step.

Do the rep

  1. Push straight down through the foot on the step and stand up tall on it.
  2. Keep the other foot in the air beside the step.
  3. Lower the other foot back to the floor beside the step under control.

What counts as a rep

A rep counts when you stand tall on the step with the working hip and knee straight, and the other foot returns to the floor under control.

One rep starts side-on to the step with one foot on it, drives up to a full stand on it, and ends when the other foot lowers back to the floor; count each side.

Breathing

Exhale as you step up; inhale as you lower.

Cues

  • Push straight down through the step.
  • Keep the hips level.
  • Lower slowly beside the step.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing off the floor foot

What you seeThe foot on the floor bounces to start the rep.

FixKeep that foot light and let the leg on the step do the work.

The working leg must lift the body for the rep to train it.

  • Hip dropping

What you seeThe hip on the free side sinks as you stand.

FixUse a lower step and keep the hips level.

Level hips keep the work in the hip muscles of the working leg.

Stop the set if

  • Stop if you feel sharp pain.
  • Stop if the step moves or tips.
  • End the set when you cannot stand up on the step without pushing off the floor foot.
