How to do it

Set up

  1. Set the bench to an inclined position and lie back with the upper back supported.
  2. Hold one dumbbell in each hand above the chest with the palms facing each other.
  3. Press the inner sides of the dumbbells together and keep inward pressure through the whole rep.

Do the rep

  1. Lower both dumbbells toward the middle of the chest while keeping the dumbbells pressed together.
  2. Press both dumbbells above the chest until both elbows extend while keeping the dumbbells pressed together.

What counts as a rep

One rep lowers both dumbbells toward the middle of the chest and returns both elbows to extension together. Keep inward pressure between the dumbbells through both phases.

Breathing

Breathe in as the dumbbells lower; exhale as you lift.

Cues

  • Keep the wrists above the elbows.
  • Keep the upper back supported.

Common mistakes

  • Weights drift out of line

What you seeA wrist moves away from its elbow.

FixUse less load and keep each wrist above its elbow.

A stable position helps you control the load.

  • Losing inward pressure

What you seeThe dumbbells separate during the press.

FixUse less load and maintain contact through the whole rep.

Continuous inward pressure defines the squeeze variant.

Stop the set if

  • Stop if you feel sharp pain.
  • Stop if you lose your grip or cannot control the dumbbell path.
  • End the set when you cannot meet the rep standard under control.
