How to do it
Set up
- Hold a barbell at the front of the shoulders with feet at squat width.
Do the rep
- Squat while keeping the bar supported at the shoulders.
- Stand forcefully and press the bar overhead in one continuous action.
- Lower the bar to the shoulders before the next squat.
What counts as a rep
A rep counts when the squat passes below knee height and the hips, knees, and elbows finish fully extended.
One rep lowers until the hip crease is below the knee, then ends standing with hips, knees, and elbows fully extended overhead.
Breathing
Breathe in and brace before the squat; exhale as the bar reaches overhead.
Cues
- Keep the bar close
- Drive with the legs
- Finish overhead
Common mistakes
Pressing before standing
What you seeThe arms work while the hips are still low in the squat.
FixDrive out of the squat before finishing the press.
Leg drive should move the bar before the arms finish the press.
Missing squat depth
What you seeThe hip crease remains above the knee before the drive.
FixUse less load and reach full squat depth before standing.
Squat depth and overhead lockout make the combined rep complete.
Stop the set if
- Stop if you feel sharp pain.
- Stop if the bar moves away from your balance or the overhead lockout is unstable.
- End the set when you cannot meet the stated range under control.
