How to do it
Set up
- Kneel on a mat with the body in one line from the knees to the head, and secure the ankles.
- Loop a band around the chest from a fixed anchor behind you, or place a bench in front of you.
Do the rep
- Keep the hips straight and lower the body forward slowly against the band.
- Stop at the bench or catch yourself with the hands at the end of the range.
- Pull back up to upright kneeling with the help of the band or a light push from the hands.
What counts as a rep
A rep counts when the body lowers under control with the hips straight to the end point and returns to upright kneeling.
One rep starts upright on the knees, lowers the body forward with the hips straight to the assisted end point, and returns to upright kneeling.
Breathing
Inhale before you lower; exhale as you pull back up.
Cues
- Keep one line from the knees to the head.
- Lower at the same slow speed all the way.
- Use a lighter band or a lower bench when the reps get easy.
Common mistakes
Bending at the hips
What you seeThe hips move back and the body folds forward.
FixSqueeze the glutes and keep the hips straight.
Straight hips keep the load on the hamstrings.
Riding the band
What you seeThe band pulls the body back up fast.
FixUse a lighter band and pull up with the hamstrings.
Too much help takes the work away from the hamstrings.
Stop the set if
- Stop if you feel sharp pain.
- Stop if you feel a sudden pull or a cramp in the back of the thigh.
- Stop if the ankle support, the band or its anchor moves.
